Abstract
This article is dedicated to the genre and stylistic analysis of artistic reports about the first year of the full-scale war in Ukraine, written by Ukrainian and international media professionals of The Reckoning Project and gathered in the collection «The Scariest Days of My Life». It examines the genre-specific features of these texts, which combine documentary and artistic elements, factuality and emotionality. Emphasis is placed on the relevance and importance of the genre, which influences the consciousness and feelings of readers and can serve as evidence in international and national courts regarding war crimes committed during the occupation of Ukrainian territories. The article identifies the means of artistic expression and their role in preserving collective memory, understanding human experience, and documenting the realities of war. The article outlines the difference between artistic reports on military topics written by ordinary journalists and writers without military experience, and war reports – created by war correspondents (military contributors), or combatants – witnesses of events who usually have special physical and psychological training and special permits, or are direct participants. The main focus is on depicting the atmosphere of war, its horrors, absurdity, and the comprehension of profound human pain. The report «Having Such Knowledge – What Forgiveness?» raises the topic of the impossibility of getting used to war, losses, and destruction. The tragedy of people who lost their homes for the second time – first due to Chernobyl, and later due to the war – is revealed in the report “Chernihiv. The Third of March.” The consequences of wars in three different cities in different countries are compared in the report “Putin’s Textbook of Crimes: Grozny, Aleppo, Mariupol”. The poignant work “Yahidne. ‘The Scariest Days of My Life’”, which gave its name to the entire collection, deals with civilians held in a basement under inhumane conditions. The topic of targeted strikes on the civilian population is revealed in materials about Mariupol, Kramatorsk, and Kremenchuk. The reports also touch upon occupation policies, crimes against humanity, the forced deportation of children to the Russian Federation (“Return Me to My Dad!”), and are also dedicated to the heroism of medics who worked in occupied cities (“Hospital Held Hostage”). These are testimonies that do not allow us to forget: the war continues, and it concerns everyone.
