Abstract
The article publishes the results of a study of the development of urban agglomerations in European countries and Ukraine. It was found that for the period 2014-2024 in European countries and Ukraine, except for Poland, there is a tendency to increase the share of the urban population in the total population. The largest share of the urban population is in countries such as Belgium (98.1% in 2024) and the Netherlands (92.6% in 2024). The following European countries have the lowest level of urbanization: Serbia (56.7% in 2024) and Romania (54.3% in 2024). Two factors influencing the process of urban population growth in Ukraine and European countries are identified: natural population growth and urban population migration. It was found that in all European countries, except for Denmark, a decrease in natural population growth per 1000 people was observed during the studied period. The following countries had positive population growth figures per 1,000 people in 2024: Norway (2.6), Sweden (2.2), Switzerland (2.1), France (1.2), Denmark (1.0). The following countries had significantly negative natural population growth figures per 1,000 people in 2024: Bulgaria (- 13.2), Ukraine (-11.2), Serbia (-10.9), Romania (-8.2). The conducted studies concluded that the growth in urbanization rates in European countries and Ukraine occurred not due to natural population growth, but due to other factors. It was found that over the studied period of time 2014-2024. The urban population grew at an accelerated pace due to urban migration in countries such as Ukraine (13 times), Spain (9.9 times), Portugal (3.23 times), Romania (2.89 times), Serbia (2.2 times), Bulgaria (2 times), Hungary (45.19%), Belgium (38.95%), France (31.5%), the Netherlands (27.85%), Finland (17.51%). It was concluded that the factor of urban population migration in most European countries and Ukraine can be considered influential on the pace of urbanization. It was found that in most European countries in 2014-2024 there was a slow increase in the proportion of the population living in cities with a population of less than 1 million. people and a more significant increase in the proportion of the population living in cities with a population of more than 1 million people.
