Abstract
The article examines the phenomenon of domestic violence as one of the key factors in the development of mental trauma in children. It provides an analysis of current research on the impact of a violent environment on the child’s psyche. The study presents the results of research aimed at exploring the signs and consequences of traumatic experiences caused by domestic violence among future psychologists. A survey of students confirmed that domestic violence is a powerful factor in a child’s mental traumatisation, with potentially long-lasting effects. It was found that the most common form of domestic violence experienced or witnessed by the surveyed students during childhood was psychological abuse in its various forms. Parents and/or siblings were most frequently identified as the perpetrators of such abuse. The study revealed that psychological trauma resulting from domestic violence significantly affects a child's emotional, cognitive, and social development, shaping dysfunctional worldviews and self-perception patterns that may persist throughout life. It was established that traumatized children fall into a high-risk group: as they approach adulthood, they often experience high levels of anxiety, low self-esteem, and insecurity. These factors hinder their personal and professional identity formation and self-realization. Due to unmotivated aggression, they may become either victims or perpetrators of abuse in their own families. They also tend to exhibit excessive suspiciousness and pessimism, face difficulties in building partner relationships, and are prone to self-destructive or even suicidal behavior. The research showed that future psychologists are generally aware of these risks and seek to work through their traumatic experiences. Their chosen profession provides them with the tools to systematically engage in prevention efforts, foster changes in societal attitudes, and strengthen family bonds during a critical period of development in Ukrainian society.
