Abstract

The article explores the shift in digital culture from inspiration to irony and digital nihilism, driven by disillusionment with influencers and social media algorithms. It examines the rise of “de-influencing” and “anti-haul” content, which critiques consumerism and the commodification of authenticity. A new meta-vocabulary emerges to decode manipulative platform mechanisms. Algorithmic fatigue and growing skepticism lead to the fragmentation of digital society and the rise of micro-communities that employ irony as a defense mechanism. Digital nihilism, particularly through shitposting, serves as a strategy to navigate information overload. The article highlights irony’s potential to foster a more ethically reflective digital culture.
