Abstract

The article seeks to explore the means of the Gothic and Old Norse languages used in comparisons of equity. The detailed analysis of language data reveals that comparisons of equal objects and actions in the languages are carried out by a set of conjunctions. The conjunctions in question trace their origin back to PIE, having cognates in IE languages. Both languages retain archaic position of conjunction pairs, being the distant one as opposed to innovative contact position of OE conjunctions. The choice of language means is often determined by the object of comparison (action / object(s)). The article holds that Gothic comparisons of equity, being Biblical expressions, do not allow to trace the worldview of the Goths, Old Norse comparisons contain language units having to do with environment (flora, fauna). The data from other old Germanic languages are included
