Abstract

The article is devoted to a critical analysis of the results of a survey conducted to study the features of the use of the Foggiandialect of the Italian language, which is an important element of the linguistic and cultural heritage of Southern Italy. The main task of the study was to clarify the role and functions of the Foggia dialect in modern communication, as well as to determine the areas in which it retains its activity. Data analysis showed that the Foggiandialect is mainly used in informal contexts, such as communication within the family circle, with friends and acquaintances. These areas of communication create comfortable conditions for speakers, contributing to the free expression of regional identity.The source of the study was the responses of 65 respondents to a targeted online survey. The source base of the study is represented by works on the experimental study of dialects by V. Labov, theoretical studies of dialects by E. Haugen, dialect diversity of Italyby S. Wichmann, E. Haugen, K. Marcato, V. Labov, T. De Mauro and F. Avolio, etc. The method of targeted interviewing is used to collect dialect material and includes a descriptive approach and comparative techniques, which are used to present dialect data in the article. Contextual analysis methods are also used to identify areas of dialect use and identify literaryequivalents.The study focuses on the significance of the dialect as a social marker that unites the inhabitants of the province of Foggia.
