Abstract

Being a teacher may seem like a peaceful profession. Education itself is associated with advancement, progress, and sustainability. Teaching is about imparting knowledge, information, and skills. It is about sharing, forming, cultivating values and beliefs, and shaping the minds of individuals. Teaching means bringing new ideas. Teaching is amazing as it comprises interpersonal communication between a teacher and student(s), collaboration with colleagues, as well as personal growth and personality development. It is always about being on the move. Teaching involves continuous learning as teachers have to stay updated on what is going on in this world. Teaching demands a lot. At least we have always perceived it this way. We have been teaching for a long time and we have enough experience to deal with different situations, to solve different problems. But we were not ready to cope with such an abrupt and dramatic change as a full-scale military aggression against our country. As no one ever is. It turned out that the aforementioned things are for a peaceful life because being a teacher in wartime demands even more. We had to learn to live under different—unusual—circumstances and face a new reality with additional obstacles and challenges we had never thought of. In this chapter, we will provide brief insights into relevant literature on teaching in crisis-affected contexts worldwide, share some personal experiences of teaching during wartime, and present the results of a survey we conducted to gain insights into the experiences of our students.
