Abstract

The concepts of “psychological climate,” “family cohesion,” and “family adaptability” are revealed as indicators of the quality of interpersonal relationships among family members, which allow for a more accurate assessment of the family situation and more effective resolution of family problems. The psychological climate is defined as a set of psychological conditions that either promote or hinder family unity, encompassing the overall emotional atmosphere in the family, including the level of support, trust, and satisfaction with relationships. It has been established that the psychological climate is influenced by several factors: the macro-environment—global factors such as the economy, the level of state development, the general cultural level of society, interpersonal relations, and the level of public consciousness; and the micro-environment—which includes the family’s financial and social status, the nature of activities (personal or public), the distribution of roles, and the quality of physical relationships within the family. Cohesion and adaptability are basic indicators of a favorable psychological climate in the family. In contrast, the level of family cohesion and adaptability determines the quality of emotional bonds and interpersonal communication among family members. Empirical evidence confirms the dependence of family cohesion levels on the stage of the family life cycle, as well as the tendency for the highest cohesion levels in young couples to decrease in families with teenagers, followed by a slight increase in mature married couples. Overall, the empirical study conducted using D. Olson’s methodology confirmed the hypothesis that the family’s psychological climate depends on the level of cohesion and adaptability among its members, and that the balance of these indicators determines the type of family functioning.
