Abstract

Mathematics has played a foundational role in the development of computer science, and its teaching now faces the challenge of integrating digital technologies— particularly artificial intelligence (AI)—for educational purposes. Objective. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an AI-based tool in school-level mathematics instruction, particularly in addressing didactic challenges. Materials and Methods. A quasi-experimental, mixed-methods design was implemented during the 2023–2024 academic year with a sample of 100 secondary school students in Kyiv. Pre- and post-test results were compared between a control group and an experimental group that used the Photomath application. Additionally, a student perception survey was conducted. Results. The experimental group showed a statistically significant improvement in mathematics performance (p < 0.001) compared to the control group. Furthermore, 82% of students reported increased motivation, and 90% stated that Photomath facilitated their learning. These findings suggest that AI can serve as an effective support in the teaching and learning process. Conclusions. Integrating AI into mathematics education requires adaptations in curricula and teaching methodologies to meet the demands of today’s digital learning environments. When supported by proper teacher training and pedagogical frameworks, AI can enhance student understanding, motivation, and academic achievement.
