Abstract
Savinykh M. Development of the Book Design for John Fowles’ "The Collector". Qualification Work. Kyiv. Borys Grinchenko Kyiv Metropolitan University, 2025. 64 p. This thesis is dedicated to a detailed study of the stages of development in book illustration, its influence on culture, and modern trends in book design using the example of John Fowles' novel The Collector. The research explores the historical stages of the development of book illustration, from the first drawings on papyrus to digital forms that have become the foundation for contemporary graphic solutions. Special attention is given to the analysis of the development of illustration in the context of historical eras, from ancient times to the modern era, particularly how they influenced aesthetic and psychological aspects of world perception. A particular emphasis is placed on the impact of book illustration on human culture and its ability to shape the consciousness and emotional state of individuals. This allows for an exploration of the importance of illustrations not only as aesthetic elements but also as powerful tools for psychological influence on the reader, which is a key aspect in the creation of book graphic design. The study also explores the contemporary process of digitization in book design, which has changed traditional approaches to creating illustrations. It identifies how digital technologies expand artists' capabilities, allowing for the creation of new forms of illustrations – from interactive elements to digital collages. The thesis analyzes competing editions of The Collector and other psychological thrillers, particularly their graphic design. A comparison was made to identify the most effective and popular approaches to book design, taking into account the strengths and avoiding the mistakes of previous designs. The work concludes with the development of original graphic solutions for the book: a cover, a dust jacket, and eight illustrations, created using a complex authorial graphic technique. These not only reflect the atmosphere of the work but also convey the depth of the psychological state of the characters, their inner world, which is crucial for revealing the meaning of John Fowles' novel.
