Abstract

Professor Vasyl Lyaskoronskyi (1859 – 1928) was a Ukrainian historian, archaeologist, ethnographer, numismatist, cartographer, and representative of the older generation of the Volodymyr Antonovych Kyiv School of Historians, which was part of the School of Historians of the University of St. Volodymyr in the 19th century. The Volodymyr Antonovych Kyiv School of Historians gave the world about forty outstanding and talented scholars who constituted the elite of Ukrainian historical science in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among them, Vasyl Lyaskoronsky’s personality occupies an honorable place. Volodymyr Antonovych Kyiv School of Historians was characterized by the complexity of research, the thoroughness of the source base and scientific research apparatus, and a deep penetration into the essence of the problem. The same features characterize the scientific legacy of Vasyl Lyaskoronsky. The scientific achievements of representatives of the Volodymyr Antonovych Kyiv School of Historians give reason to consider it the first national school of research into the history of Ukraine. Vasyl Lyaskoronsky left a notable contribution to the history of the study of the Ukrainian past, and lived a fruitful and interesting life. However, his personality has been little studied, and his life and scientific legacy are poorly researched. The purpose of this article is to analyze the works of Ukrainian historians who researched the personality of Vasyl Lyaskoronsky in 1929 – 2025. The methodological basis of this article is the use of historical-chronological, retrospective, biographical, comparative-historical, systemic-structural, and historical-typological methods. Our analysis of research into the personality of Vasyl Lyaskoronsky by Ukrainian historians for the years 1929 – 2025 showed that the figure of the scholar was studied in the context of considering his biography, in memories of his personality, in a cursory description of his life path and scientific legacy, in his activities as a cartographer, professor of the Nizhyn School of Higher Sciences, archaeologist, in correspondence as a numismatist, in his memories of Volodymyr Antonovych. However, these studies only touched on the abovementioned issues and did not reveal Vasyl Lyaskoronsky’s personality deeply and comprehensively as a scholar and a person. The life, scientific, significant archival legacy, and epistolary of Vasyl Lyaskoronsky have not lost their significance today and await a thorough study, comprehension, and popularization by the younger generation of Ukrainian researchers of the 21st century. We hereby pay tribute to the generation of scholars who, through their scientific work and public activities, laid the foundation of modern Ukraine, its science, education, and culture.
