Abstract
The article investigates the significance and structuring potential of tempo for the process of meaning making. The momentum of the fourth part of the Mahler’s symphony is considered in the context of the compositional and dramatic features of the whole cycle and in connection with intonationally related songs, from the standpoint of the philosophical and aesthetic positions of the composer. The article traces semantic transformations of the Adagietto which originate in tempo changes.
