Abstract

The complex socio-political situation in Ukraine dictates the special attention of the psychological community to the study of the peculiarities of the overcoming behavior of the civilian population, which during a long period was forced to adapt to the crisis conditions of life. The life of a modern Ukrainian is surrounded by difficult situations, which prompts a person to choose certain strategies for overcoming difficult life circumstances. Therefore, every person is faced with the need to solve psychological problems throughout his life and needs adequate coping strategies in case of increased exposure to stress. Changing living conditions, many challenges and stresses force the modern personality to look for new ways of effective adapta tion, however, the process of adaptation to stressful situations may not always be constructive. In turn, psychological defenses and coping strategies, which are the main constructs of an individual’s coping behavior, can act as ways to overcome stress. The content of this article describes the psychological types of coping behavior we found in persons with a non-constructive form of reac tion to stress, namely persons prone to addiction. Dependent behavior in this case is defined as a persistent compulsive need for a certain activity, as well as a non-constructive form of finding psy chological balance through departure from reality, i.e. avoiding stress. This article also characterizes the peculiarities of the overcoming behavior of civil ians within three age periods: adolescence, young adulthood, and early adulthood. The purpose of our research is to theoretically substantiate and empirically investigate the psychological features of the coping behavior of the civilian population of Ukraine, as well as to form the psychological coping types of persons prone to addictive behavior as a non-constructive form of reaction to stress.
