Abstract

Vasyl Danylevych (1872 – 1936), a Ukrainian historian, archaeologist, numismatist, museologist, representative of the younger generation of the Volodymyr Antonovych Kyiv School of Historians, which was part of the School of Historians of St. Volodymyr University, left a noticeable mark in the history of the study of the Ukrainian past, was one of the outstanding Ukrainian historians of the late 19th – first third of the 20th century. The Volodymyr Antonovych Kyiv School of Historians was characterized by the complexity of its research, the thoroughness of the source base and scientific apparatus of research, and deep penetration into the essence of the problem. These same features characterize the scientific legacy of Vasyl Danylevych. The scientific achievements of the representatives of the Volodymyr Antonovych Kyiv School of Historians give grounds to consider it the first national school of research into the history of Ukraine. Vasyl Danylevych was not mentioned either in Soviet Ukraine or in the first years of independent Ukraine. The purpose of the article is to analyze the works of Ukrainian historians who studied the personality of Vasyl Danylevych in 1919 – 2023. The methodological basis of the study is the use of historical-chronological, retrospective, biographical, comparative-historical, systemic-structural, and historical-typological methods. Our analysis of the works of Ukrainian historians for 1919 – 2023, who studied the personality of Vasyl Danylevych, shows that the study of the life path, scientific, pedagogical, and public activities of Vasyl Danylevych, after more than sixty years of oblivion in Soviet Ukraine and in the first years of independent Ukraine, became more active at the beginning of the 21st century, grew quantitatively during the second decade of the 21st century, and significantly deepened on the occasion of the scientist’s 150th anniversary. Vasyl Danylevych belonged to the elite of Ukrainian historical science of his time, to the generation of Ukrainian scholars who, with their scientific work and social activities, laid the foundation of modern Ukraine, its science, education, and culture. The life and work of Vasyl Danylevych is an example of the selfless attitude towards science inherent in scholars of the old, classical school. Vasyl Danylevych fully confirmed this with his life and scientific activities. The personality of Vasyl Danylevych is multifaceted; it requires further disclosure, research, understanding, and popularization by the younger generation of Ukrainian historians of the 21st century.
