Abstract
The article dwells on the artistic and educational value of the vocal heritage of the West Ukrainian composers of the late 19th – early 20th century. It offers musicological analysis and describes peculiarities of the oeuvre of such prominent West Ukrainian composers as Sydir Vorobkevych, Anatole Vakhnianyn, Viktor Matiuk – representatives of the older generation whose musical and vocal works resemble the style of the “Przemysl School”. It also considers the works of the representatives of the young generation – Ostap Nizhankivskiy, Filaret Kolessa, and Yaroslav Barnych whose musical heritage has enriched Ukrainian music. The article emphasizes that the vocal heritage of the Ukrainian composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries possesses a great artistic and educational potential which is based on such features as: - deep musical content and focus on the humanistic values; - providing of a true and vivid actualization of the literary work in music; - rendering of the national peculiarities and characteristics which help to create the harmony; - stressing the importance of the folk culture; - deep psychologization and colorful emotional development of the musical images; - variety of music styles and genres; - sophisticated musical language (polyphonic expression, subtlety of melody, variety of musical scales and modes, colorful architectonic characteristics of poetry and music, and dramatic integrity). The further research of this topic may give clues to understanding the problematic issues of spiritual education (via music) of both school pupils and students of secondary and higher educational establishments.
