Abstract
The article explores the transformation processes of performing arts that occurred in the early 20th century. The author analyzes how creative experiments and stage provocations by innovative directors influenced the development of theatre, turning directing into a key element of the theatrical process. The concepts and creative strategies of key figures from this period are examined, particularly Jean Cocteau, Antonin Artaud ("theatre of cruelty"), Bertolt Brecht ("epic theatre"), Vsevolod Meyerhold (biomechanics), Konstantin Stanislavski (psychological realism), Les Kurbas (avant-gardism, expressionism), and others. The contribution of these directors to the rethinking of acting methods, approaches to scenography, and forms of communication with the audience is analyzed. It is concluded that the experimental pursuits of the early 20th century became a catalyst for change and formed a multi-layered theatrical discourse that continues to develop today.
