Abstract
This article examines the evolution of the 20th-century American musical as a unique cultural phenomenon that transitioned from light entertainment to a powerful platform for social commentary. The artistic and social dimensions of the genre are analyzed, identifying the primary ways it reflected pressing social issues and influenced public consciousness. Using key works such as "Show Boat" (which pioneered the integration of serious drama), "Porgy and Bess", and "West Side Story", the article traces how the musical began to address themes of racial discrimination, class inequality, and inter-ethnic conflicts. Further analysis of productions like "Fiddler on the Roof", "Hair", and "Falsettos" reveals the specific artistic embodiment of themes related to cultural identity, antisemitism, counterculture, war, and the AIDS crisis. It is concluded that these works not only reflected the profound transformations in American theatrical culture but also became catalysts for social change themselves, proving the genre's ability to combine artistic expression with deep social reflection.
