Abstract

The article explores the intellectual heritage of the Ukrainian school of scientific management that emerged in the 1920s at the All-Ukrainian Institute of Labor in Kharkiv. The relevance of the study lies in the need to restore historical justice concerning the contribution of Ukrainian scholars to global management thought and to rethink the origins of the cognitive-behavioral paradigm of management. The purpose of the study is to reveal the formation of the Ukrainian school of management as the origin of the cognitive approach to management and to show that its methodological principles created the intellectual foundation of the modern humanistic-behavioral paradigm. The article traces the evolution of management thought from Taylor’s technocratic model to the socially oriented Kharkiv school, centered on the human being as a subject of organizational development. Based on the works of O. Gastev and F. Dunaievskyi, it is shown that Ukrainian scholars combined technical rationality, social engineering, and intellectual autonomy of the worker. This laid the foundations for modern process management, behavioral economics, and the concept of self-management.The Ukrainian school of management arose in the postwar and revolutionary period, when rebuilding the economy required not only discipline but also a new philosophy of labor. While the global recovery of the early twentieth century was based on standardization, control, and technological expansion, Ukrainian management thought recognized the human being not as a resource but as the intellectual center of the system. The concepts of O. Gastev and F. Dunaievskyi can be seen as a philosophy of labor where management functions as a mechanism of social self-renewal. The article highlights the relevance of these ideas in the age of digital transformation, cognitive economics, and postwar reconstruction. It outlines directions for further interdisciplinary research on the legacy of the All-Ukrainian Institute of Labor as a prototype of modern knowledge management systems and digital humanism. The study emphasizes that Ukrainian management philosophy anticipated many principles of today’s human-centered and innovation-oriented management thinking.
