Abstract

The article aims at investigating transpositional potential of interrogative utterances to be used as expressive speech acts in Middle and Early New English. Primary attention is paid to rhetorical questions. The approach is to outline the language units that enable the detection of expressive meaning of interrogative utterances like reproach, pity, regret, groaning. Such utterances are viewed in diachronic perspective, the analysis is based on rich data selected from Middle and Early New English texts representing different literary genres
