Abstract

The article analyzes the problem of the influence of mental trauma on the formation of the victim position in the partner of a deceased serviceman. It is proven that mental trauma experienced due to the loss of a partner-serviceman can become a powerful factor in the formation of the victim position in a woman. This stable personal state is characterized by passivity, feelings of powerlessness, helplessness, an external locus of control, and a belief in one’s own inability to influence the course of life, which complicates adaptation to new living conditions. It has been established that the victim position of the partners of deceased servicemen has a complex determination, encompassing individual (mental trauma due to the loss of a loved one, complicated (pathological) grief, chronic emotional instability and burnout, experience of victim behaviour, life scenario of a loser) and social factors (lack of support, social isolation, stigmatization of the role of a widow, prolonged social tension and turbulence, collective trauma). Their impact on adaptation is defined as destructive, since they contribute to fixation on the loss, block the formation of a new identity and complicate the passage through the stages of grief. Typical signs of the victim position formed in the partner of a deceased serviceman are the woman’s repressiveness, fixation on the past and an exclusively negative image of the future; psychological destabilization, entrenched helplessness, a feeling of powerlessness due to the loss of control over one’s own life; devaluation of one’s own capabilities and expectations of help from outside. To avoid fixation of the victim’s position, it is important to provide the woman with timely psychological support, which includes individual and group psychotherapy, to balance retrospective and prospective vectors of the life course, and against the background of post-traumatic recovery, to activate resources for self-realization (education, work, participation in community projects, etc.).
