Abstract

This article presents the results of a theoretical and empirical study of the socio-psychological adaptability of Ukrainian families living under difficult life circumstances caused by war and forced migration. The research focuses on a comparative analysis of adaptive strategies in families that remained in Ukraine and those that relocated abroad. The theoretical framework is based on the integration of R. Hill’s ABCX model of family adaptation with F. Walsh’s concept of familyresilience. Adaptation is conceptualized as a dynamic process that involves the interaction between stressors, internal family resources, cognitive appraisal, and adaptive outcomes, incorporating such core components as cohesion, communication openness, role flexibility, and perception of crisis as a challenge. The empirical part of the study involved semi-structured interviews with 58 families, including 32 still residing in Ukraine and 26 currently living abroad. The data were collected using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), a family cohesion scale, a subjective crisis interpretation questionnaire, and an author-developed set of family resilience indicators. The findings revealed notable differences between the two groups: migrant families demonstrated higher levels of resilience (81% compared to 60%), perceived social support (77% compared to 52%), and positive crisis reappraisal (74% compared to 58%). At the same time, families who remained in Ukraine showed stronger emotional cohesion and more stable intrafamilial communication. The results confirm the relevance of a combined theoretical framework for studying family adaptation mechanisms in crisis situations and justify the implementation of targeted socio-psychological support programs. The study advocates for differentiated intervention strategies tailored to the unique needs of internally displaced families and Ukrainian migrants abroad. Future research perspectives include an in-depth investigation of family identity transformation, cross-cultural adaptation strategies, and the role of digital platforms in enhancing family-level resilience in times of crisis.
