Abstract

The article examines the impact of the information concept on the development of social institutions in a networked society. The research object is the basic social institutions identified on a functional basis: institutions of family, ritual, education, religion, politics, and economics. The importance of the information factor in the transformation of social institutions is substantiated, and the methodological positions of social researchers who considered this topic in their works are presented. It is shown that the information concept and the conditions of a networked society cause the following transformations of social institutions: a) in the institution of the family, traditional roles of husband and wife are changing, new forms of family relations are emerging, and the role of the Internet in family life is increasing; b) new forms and types of ritual practices appear, which preserve the spirit of tradition or offer new forms of preservation, and at the same time legitimize new types of ritualized behavior associated with cyberculture and crossborder youth subcultures; c) in the field of education, against the background of the application of new network technologies and teaching methods, the role-playing behavior of students and teachers changes, theories emerge and develop that suggest the possibility of human learning through technologies and machines, as well as the probability of learning machines themselves in the context of the development of artificial intelligence; d) the religious institution, thanks to the Internet and networks, expands its own communication channels, and communication regarding religious practices and content becomes more dialogical and tolerant. In addition, information contributes to an increase in the weight of an individual’s religious experience as a manifestation of globalization and support for non-traditional religious practices for a particular community; e) in the field of politics, the ways of conducting political campaigns are changing, e-government is emerging, the role of civil society is growing, new network tools are being mastered, which contribute to the formation of a collective will to make socially sound decisions at the legislative level; f) based on the understanding of information as a commodity and as a new resource, a digital economy emerges, forms of work and employment change, and the role of startups and digital platforms grows.
