Abstract
The conference abstract highlights the use of the motif of journey in poetry of the American poet Louise Glück, particularly as a means of reflecting on the process of overcoming traumatic experience and the painful sense of the impossibility of returning to ordinary life while standing on the threshold between the real and the infernal. The transformation and reinterpretation of the image of Persephone — the daughter of Demeter and the wife of Hades, who travels between two worlds — is traced. Traditionally, Persephone symbolizes the immortality of the soul; however, Glück uses her image to foreground the corporeality of existence. In the poet’s work, Persephone appears as an ordinary mortal girl, stripped of her sacredness and mythic stature.
