Abstract
This article discusses the reasons for the division of Korea and why it has not yet reunified. It covers the situation on the Korean Peninsula, security issues, and international relations 79 years after the actual division of Korea. The article also examines the key issues in Russia's relations with the DPRK and the ROK at the present stage. It also considers the current US policy on the Korean Peninsula. The question of why Korea is one of the few countries that remain divided is explored. The article concludes that new relations on the Korean Peninsula must be built based on existing political realities to prevent new conflicts and ensure stable peace on the Korean Peninsula. The article also analyzes the mechanism of the UN Security Council sanctions against North Korea, their impact on the political, economic, and social situation in the DPRK. It discusses the ineffectiveness of the sanctions, which have even led to closer ties between the DPRK and Russia, and how the sanctions are practically ineffective at the current stage due to violations by Russia, China, and other countries. Given that the sanctions imposed on North Korea are ineffective and the sharp rapprochement between Russia and North Korea poses a real threat to South Korea, other ways to resolve the problem of the Korean split must be sought. Given the establishment of a new world order, based on the new policy of US President Donald Trump, the Republic of Korea needs to be more independent and more decisive in preventing and resolving the North Korean problem. This should be based solely on the national interests of the Koreans, not the United States. At the same time, one should not forget about further strengthening the country's defense capabilities, based on the new strategy of its ally, the United States. Relations with China are also very important, as China is one of the countries that can influence the resolution of the Korean problem. Of course, the further escalation of armaments, the sharp rapprochement between Russia and the DPRK, and the bloc confrontation between China and the US have exacerbated the situation on the Korean Peninsula to the extreme. Therefore, the new administration of Donald Trump, ROK President Yoon Suk-yeol, and the new Prime Minister of Japan, Shigeru Ishiba, need to find a new approach to resolving this difficult situation. But the situation is complicated, given the unpredictability of US President Donald Trump's strategy and policy. Of course, much depends on US policy, on US-RK, US-Japan, US-China, and US-Russia relations. The Republic of Korea's policy will also change depending on whether the United States considers South Korea a regional partner or a global partner, like Japan. But in any case, the Republic of Korea needs to defend its national interests and have more freedom in making political and economic decisions.
