Abstract

The Lublin Sejm of 1569 and the Union of Lublin are among the most important and well-studied events in the early modern history of Central and Eastern Europe. Since the publication of two Sejm diaries – one by Adam Titus Działyński in 1856 and another by Michail Koyalovich in 1869 – historians have continuously turned to these sources to study the Sejm’s history. Among these sources, the diary published by Koyalovich stands out for two reasons: firstly, it contains discrepancies and additions compared to Działyński’s edition; and secondly, it was translated into Russian, making it more accessible to researchers for whom Polish was not their native language. This article analyzes the manuscript file that contains the diary of the 1569 Lublin Sejm, which served as the basis for Koyalovich’s publication. The uniqueness of this file lies in the fact that it can be considered part of the political archive of one of the most prominent figures of the Polish Kingdom in the 1560s and 1580s – Walenty Ożechowski, the Przemyśl terrestri judge. This perspective allows not only for an examination of the preserved materials but also for an analysis of the Lublin Sejm diary from an entirely different viewpoint. In his preface to the diary’s edition, Koyalovich speculated that its author was likely someone from the Ruthenian Voivodeship. Examining the Lublin Sejm through the eyes of a mid-level official noble from this region – specifically, one of the most politically active figures of his generation, Walenty Ożechowski – offers a fresh perspective on the events. This article presents statistical data on the speeches given by senators and envoys from various voivodeships of the Polish Crown. The data indicate that the diary’s author(s) were exceptionally knowledgeable about and focused on the speeches of ambassadors from Ruthenian and its neighboring voivodeships. By reconsidering the key topics of the Lublin Sejm in this context, we gain a renewed understanding of historical facts that have shaped scholarly and popular narratives on the subject for over 150 years.
