Abstract

The article analyzes foreign scientific literature on the use of genograms, and also considers the effectiveness of genograms in the practice of family counseling. A genogram is a family map that uses special symbols to describe relationships, main events and changes in the family in different generations. The therapeutic significance of this tool is emphasized. While using genogram patients can reflect several generations of ancestors, explore family patterns of interaction, emotional intergenerational ties, typical conflicts, as well as the strengths of the family system. The process of creating a genogram being carried out jointly greatly contributes to the therapeutic alliance. Genograms are used in various fields, including psychology, medicine, social work, genetic research, education, etc. Family intervention sessions using genograms contributed to the healing process, caused affective, cognitive and behavioral changes in family interaction. Classical and alternative genograms are described. In particular, the transgenerational genogram of trauma and resilience (TTRG), the military genogram, and variations of genograms aimed at helping children and adolescents are presented. TTRG is described as an adaptation of the genogram that enhances cultural sensitivity and trauma sensitivity and is used in trauma-oriented practice. The military genogram is used to assess and provide assistance to a professional military client and his/her family, aimed at a comprehensive understanding of the client and his/her family, taking into account the peculiarities of military culture as well as encompassing a solution-focused approach. Adapted genograms are presented that meet the needs of clients – children and adolescents, using materials and techniques that are consistent with their level of development. Variations of genograms are effective for children to describe their relationships with family members / significant others.
