Abstract

The article provides an analysis of contemporary interpretations of the concepts of ‘stress’ and ‘stress coping strategies’ in psychology. It has been found that ‘stress coping strategies’ are a set of cognitive, psycho-emotional and behavioural efforts aimed at neutralising or eliminating stress factors. Theoretical analysis of the characteristics of psychological stress management strategies applied by female military personnel revealed that individual stress response profiles depend on gender, age, personality traits, life experience, and sociocultural environment. It has been found that women in the army are capable of combining two opposing strategies for overcoming stress: masculine and feminine strategies. The empirical examination has revealed that the level of stress perception among female military personnel correlates with their subjective ability to cope with it. It has been identified that female military personnel predominantly apply problem-focused coping, applying active coping strategies, while avoidance coping is used by them the least frequently, within which the strategy of self-distraction dominates. It has been found that there are differences in the choice of stress management strategies among servicewomen with different combat experience: women served on the front lines are more likely to have high levels of perceived stress and less likely to have low levels of stress compared to those who served in backline positions. It has been revealed that masculine coping strategies prevail among female military personnel. It has been found found that women with different levels of stress perception differ in their choice between feminine and masculine stress coping strategies: female military personnel with a high level of perceived stress more often apply feminine strategies, while women with a low level of perceived stress predominantly rely on masculine strategies. The study demonstrates that emotionally-oriented coping correlates with feminine coping strategies, while avoidant coping correlates with masculine coping strategies.
