Abstract
This paper examines amateur video game journalism practices in post-Soviet countries during the late 2000s. This period was characterized by broad internet access among users who nevertheless continued to purchase printed magazines. Some enthusiasts who wished to create their own media content did not turn to blogs or online platforms. Instead, they produced self-published journals that replicated the structure and aesthetics of commercial video game magazines. This phenomenon can be understood as a form of cargo-cult imitation, in which creators attempted to reproduce the formal attributes of established publications without access to comparable resources. One illustrative case is the journal Center of Game World, whose authors produced supplementary video materials bundled as bonuses with the publication, mirroring practices of professional outlets. Many such amateur journals did not survive in digital or physical archives and can be considered examples of lost media.
