Abstract

The article substantiates the relevance of researching the competitiveness of university education under conditions of crisis transformations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the full-scale war in Ukraine, economic instability, demographic decline, and the mass emigration of students and scholars. The focus is placed on the need to revise approaches to assessing the quality of higher education, particularly through the lens of reputable rankings – the national Consolidated Ranking of Ukrainian Universities (2025) and the global QS World University Rankings (2025). Based on a comparative analysis, the article outlines the common and divergent evaluation criteria used for universities within the European and Ukrainian educational spaces. It demonstrates that despite operating under challenging conditions, Ukrainian universities retain strong development potential and a persistent drive toward integration into the global academic community. The authors highlight the opportunities that crises may bring: stimulating innovation, accelerating digital transformation, enhancing distance learning, developing international partnerships, and expanding academic mobility. The article also proposes a list of strategic actions Ukrainian universities should undertake to maintain and enhance their competitiveness, including the development of English-language programs, strengthening academic reputation, attracting international students, and improving scientometric performance. Special attention is given to the role of educology as an integrative scientific approach and the use of synergetic management models in driving educational change. The study concludes that a strategic rethinking of the role of universities is essential in the context of global challenges and growing instability.
