Abstract
The article examines the evolution of jazz performance. The factors that influenced the emergence and development of certain jazz styles, from the traditional period to the present day, are identified. Despite the large number of studies ISSN 2308-4855 (Print), ISSN 2308-4863 (Online) 37 Плохотнюк О., Кондратенко Г. Еволюція джазового виконавства: від витоків до сучасності on the history of jazz and jazz performance, not all its aspects have received adequate coverage, and there are also some discrepancies in the details of its development in foreign and domestic sources. All of the above has led to modern cultural studies of jazz performance. During the analysis of the classical period of jazz, its fundamental styles (New Orleans, Chicago, and New York “stride”) were considered, and the specifics of their performance were clarified. The peculiarities of the functioning of big orchestras – big bands with the participation of musicians of different skin colors, which became especially widespread in the “swing era”, were highlighted. A special place in the further development of jazz performance belongs to the style of bebop. Its performance specificity and differences from the traditions of music making of various styles of the classical period of jazz development are considered. The subsequent period of jazz performance development is characterized by the emergence of a large number of new styles, trends and directions, including: the period of modern jazz, in addition to bebop (hard bop, Cuban bop, funky – East Coast jazz; cool – West Coast jazz; progressive jazz, third wave), jazz avantgarde (free jazz, modal jazz, atonal jazz, mainstream, jazz-rock, fusion), etc. The main directions of jazz performance observed at the present stage among many jazz musicians are characterized, including: fusion, neo-bop in its various transformations, old traditional jazz forms (big band and Dixieland), as well as free jazz based on the style created by Coltrane. We see the further development of jazz performance in the synthesis of various styles and genres, both with academic music and with other types of music: folklore, rock, pop, rap, etc.
