Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the concepts of ‘symbol’ and ‘symbolism’ in choreographic art. A symbol is a language of culture with its own national and mental code. In the choreographic art of today, it is a means of achieving unity and integrity of the composition. Symbolism, in turn, is a type of culture or individual behaviour that is clearly oriented towards certain symbols. The aim of the article is to study and structure the means of embodying symbolism in choreographic works. The main aspects of the use of symbolism in dance performances, ballets, performances, compositions, and sketches are analysed. It is determined that the main method of conveying meaning to the viewer is the plot and figurative content of the work. It is characterised that the musical and sound accompaniment of the work is one of the main tools for the embodiment of images and characters. Also, the importance of the influence of scenic components (light, scenery, costume, make-up) and compositional solutions on the creation of the overall atmosphere of the work and the process of perception of visual information by the audience is outlined. Costume is a universal means of plastic characterisation of artistic images, playing a modelling role in the traditional culture of a nation. The article provides examples of Ukrainian national costume and its symbolic meaning. It is noted that vocabulary and choreographic text are the main structural unit of symbolism expression for a choreographer. The universality and national specificity of symbols in a particular culture are important. The conclusions outline and systematise various means of embodying symbolism in choreography, such as: lexical material, composition; musical material, as well as sounds and voices of the artists; the ideological basis of the composition; scenography; acting
