Abstract

The preservation and reinterpretation of cultural heritage have become especially significant in the context of the Russian military aggression against Ukraine, as traditional practices remain a core of Ukrainian cultural and historical identity. This article explores the interpretation of folk dance movements from the Central region of Ukraine through the technical principles of contemporary dance. The study analyzes the plastic vocabulary rooted in traditional movement culture, ritual gestures, and characteristic dance elements. Special attention is given to the impact of traditional attire on the formation of movement amplitude, rhythm, and body dynamics. These features are reconsidered through contemporary principles such as gravity, balance and imbalance, center–periphery relations, and bodily awareness. The proposed methodology integrates improvisational practices of contemporary dance with authentic Ukrainian movements, creating a foundation for developing a new plastic language. Such synthesis expands interpretative possibilities, enriches stage embodiment, and ensures the relevance of folk heritage in modern cultural contexts. The interpretation of folk vocabulary through contemporary techniques also generates new artistic meanings, where traditional forms gain metaphorical and emotional depth. The findings can be applied in concert choreography, dance pedagogy, and experimental projects that emphasize dialogue between tradition and modernity. Furthermore, the research highlights the importance of intercultural dialogue and global visibility of Ukrainian dance traditions. By rethinking folk elements through the prism of contemporary techniques, choreographers are able not only to preserve cultural memory but also to introduce it into international artistic discourse. This approach allows Ukrainian choreography to be perceived as a dynamic and innovative field that contributes to world cultural diversity. The methodology proposed in the study can serve as a practical tool for educators, performers, and researchers, fostering creative experimentation while strengthening national identity.
