Abstract
The master's thesis "Analysis of Trends in the Development of the European Innovation Space" examines current issues in the formation and development of an integrated ecosystem for stimulating innovation in the European Union (EU), taking into account Ukraine's integration prospects. In the context of globalization, geopolitical instability, and rapid technological changes, innovation activity becomes a key driver of economic growth, competitiveness, and sustainable development. The European Innovation Space (EIS) as a strategic priority of the EU, reflected in programs such as Horizon Europe, New European Innovation Agenda (NEIA), and the European Green Deal, faces challenges of fragmentation of national innovation systems, regional disparities, and insufficient commercialization of deep-tech innovations, leading to lagging behind the USA and China in key technologies such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and clean energy. For Ukraine as an EU candidate, the topic gains particular relevance in the context of modernizing the national innovation system amid war, association with Horizon Europe since 2021, and integration into the European Research Area (ERA), requiring adaptation of European experience to overcome the "innovation gap" and stimulate post-war recovery, with potential GDP growth of 2-3% through innovations. The aim of the work is to analyze trends in the development of EIS and substantiate recommendations for its improvement with prospects for Ukraine. To achieve the aim, the following tasks were addressed: defining the essence, goals, and evolution of the EIS concept as an extension of ERA with emphasis on deep-tech commercialization; identifying megatrends (technological changes, climate transition, geopolitical fragmentation) and influencing factors; providing an overview of methodological approaches (ARIMA, cluster analysis, Delphi method); conducting socio-economic diagnostics based on EIS 2025 data (EU productivity growth of 12.6% since 2018); analyzing the role of institutions (EIP, EIT, EIC) and programs; performing comparative analysis of national innovation systems (NIS) of EU countries with clusters; identifying challenges (fragmentation, "valley of death") and niches (AI, biotechnology, blue economy); developing recommendations by pillars (connectivity, talents, capital, systemic) based on ERA Policy Agenda 2025-2027; substantiating proposals for Ukraine (NRFU reforms, integration into PESCO, LUKE projects). Research methods include critical and comparative literature analysis, statistical methods (time series analysis, cluster analysis), systemic approach, scenario planning, and policy modeling. Information base: EU documents (Horizon Europe, NEIA, EIS 2025), publications by authors (S. Borras, J. Stein), Eurostat, EPO, OECD data for 2018–2025. Scientific novelty lies in improving the conceptual understanding of EIS as a dynamic ecosystem, developing a model of megatrends' impact considering geo-economic fragmentation, refining terminology through a comparative table, integrating methods (ARIMA, network analysis) for forecasting, and substantiating recommendations for modernizing Ukraine's system with focus on post-war recovery and defense technologies. Theoretical significance: new provisions on megatrends classification and methodological approaches for further innovation ecosystem research. Practical significance: recommendations for EU policy (ERA Act) and Ukraine (increasing R&D to 3% of GDP), implementation through national strategies, with potential GDP growth of 2.6% by 2035. The work consists of an introduction, three sections, conclusions, list of sources (88 items). Volume – 69 pages, 22 tables.
