Abstract

The master's thesis is devoted to a comprehensive study of the 2008 economic crisis in the United States — one of the most significant economic shocks of the modern era that shaped global financial architecture and regulatory policy for years to come. The research examines theoretical foundations of financial crises, tracing the evolution of economic thought from classical business cycle models to institutional and behavioral approaches that provide a deeper understanding of the 2008 crisis. Special attention is given to the formation of the housing bubble, the role of credit expansion, financial deregulation, the weakening of lending standards, and the impact of financial innovations such as securitization and derivatives. The second part of the thesis provides a detailed analysis of the mechanisms that triggered and amplified the crisis. It focuses on the activities of financial institutions, the functioning of the derivatives market, and the channels through which financial shocks spread across the global economy. The macroeconomic consequences of the crisis in the United States are assessed, including the decline in real GDP, the surge in unemployment, the collapse of lending activity, and the failure of numerous financial institutions. The effectiveness of government interventions such as TARP and quantitative easing programs is also analyzed. The third chapter examines key lessons of the 2008 crisis for Ukraine. It explores methodological approaches to forecasting financial instability, instruments of macroprudential policy, and the main risks facing the Ukrainian economy in a volatile international environment. Recommendations are proposed to strengthen Ukraine’s financial stability, enhance banking regulation, improve supervisory mechanisms, develop risk-management systems, and increase the transparency of financial markets. The findings of the thesis can be applied in the work of regulatory authorities, financial institutions, as well as in academic research and teaching. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of systemic financial crises and offers practical tools for developing effective preventive strategies in Ukraine.
