Abstract

The article examines the initial stage in the genesis of the category of state in the Old Germanic languages, characterized by the polycentricity of forms and functions, as well as the presence of archaic doublets and proto-categorial morphosyntactic constructions. It is argued that the blurred formal boundaries reflect the mythopoetic worldview of early Germanic speakers, in which action, state, and change were conceptualized as interconnected phenomena. The subsequent development of the category of state is analyzed in terms of the parallel functioning of synthetic and analytic models, functional overlap, and increasing paradigmatic redundancy. The study substantiates the role of analogy and systemic pressure as key mechanisms in the structuring of the grammatical system. Areal differences between West Germanic and Gothic-Scandinavian languages are identified. It is demonstrated that the optimization of the state category paradigm involves processes of elimination, functional asymmetry, and regrammatization, reflecting a shift from a syncretic to a binary model of the linguistic worldview. As a result, a dichotomous organization of the category of state emerges, opposing active and non-active forms as distinct yet interrelated dimensions of experience.
