Abstract

The paper attempts to analyze colloquial linguistic units in the novelistic works of Liuko Dashvar. The material for the analysis comprises approximately 2,000 lexical units taken from the writer’s contemporary novels. Attention is drawn to the fact that the language of modern fiction under the influence of globalization is increasingly enriched with native word-formation types that display different frequencies of use in other functional styles. Productive and less productive derivational methods represented in Liuko Dashvar’s prose are examined.It is determined that within the tendency toward autochthonization in contemporary novels, the native Ukrainian prefix nad- is gradually displacing the borrowed prefixoids mega- and super-. The frequency of the prefix o-, which in recent decades had remained in passive and low-frequency usage in colloquial and, partly, literary styles, is identified. The role of autochthonous suffixes -nu, -onu, -ot, -ukh, which differ in productivity yet emphasize the uniqueness of the author’s style, is noted.The features of the writer’s idiolect are revealed, particularly through the use of non-morphological derivation that characterizes the vocabulary of the novel’s characters. A considerable group of derivatives formed through incomplete conversion into nouns is analyzed. It is proved that personalized substantives, or individual-specific nouns, are stylistically justified in character portrayal. The affiliation of such substantives with occasional lexical units is characterized. Examples confirm that a numerically smaller group consists of non-personal substantives that denote abstract concepts and phenomena.Based on the analysis of literary texts, it is observed that secondary verbs are stylistically motivated within the writer’s idiolect. The stylistic role of telescopisms, which economize linguistic resources in the contemporary novel, is determined. The use of lexical units formed by the borrowed word-formation method of telescopy in the speech of characters is illustrated with examples. Such formations intensify the emotional states of characters and convey their feelings. The definition of individual substantives is refined as denoting personalized lexical units that characterize fictional characters by highlighting their distinctive individual features.
