Abstract

Oleksandr Hrushevsky (1877 – 1942) was a researcher of Ukrainian history, literary critic, ethnographer, archaeologist, journalist, active member of the Taras Shevchenko Scientific Society and the Ukrainian Scientific Society in Kyiv, member of the Central Rada of Ukraine, son of Serhiy Hrushevsky, brother of Mykhailo Hrushevsky and Anna Shamrai-Hrushevska, married to Olga Parfenenko, a victim of Stalin’s terror. The Soviet authorities branded Oleksandr Hrushevsky as unreliable. After his arrest in 1933, he was accused in 1938 of the fabricated "nationalist terrorism", sent into exile, where he died in 1942. Scholar represented the younger generation of the Kyiv School of Historians of Volodymyr Antonovych, which was part of the School of Historians at St. Volodymyr University in the 19th century, and produced about forty outstanding and talented scholars who constituted the elite of Ukrainian historical science of late 19th – early 20th century. The personality of Oleksandr Hrushevsky occupies an honorable place among them. The Kyiv School of historians, led by Volodymyr Antonovych, was characterized by the complexity of research, the thoroughness of the source base and scientific apparatus of research, and deep penetration into the essence of the problem. These same features characterize Oleksandr Hrushevsky’s scientific legacy. The scientific achievements of the representatives of the Kyiv School of Historians of Volodymyr Antonovych warrant considering it the first national school of research into the history of Ukraine. Historians of Ukraine began to study the personality of Oleksandr Hrushevsky after his posthumous rehabilitation in 1989. The article analyzes the works of historians of Ukraine who studied the personality of Oleksandr Hrushevsky from 1991 to 2021. The methodological basis of the study is the use of historical-chronological, retrospective, biographical, comparative-historical, systemic-structural, and historical-typological methods. The life and scientific legacy of Oleksandr Hrushevsky have not lost their significance today; they await a thorough study, understanding, and popularization by the young generation of Ukrainian researchers of the first quarter of the 21st century.
