Abstract

This publication is devoted to the issue of the interaction between jazz piano performance and the sphere of the academic music-historical process. The article examines the main areas in which the creative ideas of jazz pianists resonate with the explorations of masters of piano art from the past. A number of examples are provided illustrating the contact between jazz pianism and certain rhythmic and textural techniques of Classical and Romantic piano music. Several points of similarity in musical thinking between academic and jazz pianism are highlighted. Special attention is paid to the art of improvisation as an element of creative freedom and fantasy – vividly expressed in Baroque music and closely related to the spirit of jazz performance – as well as to the tradition of arrangements as a distinctive musical genre that serves as a model for the jazz piano school. The study applies a comparative research method. This is how we see the piano jazz school in the light in which it appears alongside the sphere of academic composer creativity. Virtuoso performance, the institute of the concert stage, the tradition of improvisation, composer arrangements, the art of pianist composers provide an opportunity to take a new, deeper look at jazz, especially piano, endowing it with a wonderful variety of historical ties, perspectives, and associations. On the other hand, when compared with the principles of piano jazz performance, the well-known, seemingly «thoroughly» studied areas of academic art acquire new shades of meaning and are filled with new content
