Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of the influence of modal-harmonic principles of jazz theory on the formation of the performer’s creative freedom. The purpose of the research is to reveal the role of modal-harmonic principles of jazz theory in the development of the performer’s creative freedom, to identify the influence of modal-harmonic principles on the development of the performer's improvisational thinking in the context of interpretative variability and individual musical expression. Research methodology. The study applies a comprehensive methodology that combines analytical-theoretical and structural-functional methods, as well as methods of music-theoretical, intonational-semantic, and comparative-stylistic analysis and synthesis. Of particular importance for this research is the analysis of improvisation transcriptions as a tool for verifying theoretical propositions, the regularly updating and expansion of the performer's musical language by listening to and researching the improvisational ideas of other performers in various styles of jazz music. Scientific novelty. The scientific novelty of the article lies in identifying the relationships between the study of the theoretical and practical foundations of the modal-harmonic principles of jazz theory and the formation of the performer’s creative improvisational skills, as well as in tracing the transition from intuitive improvisation to a conscious one based on theoretical knowledge and practical skills.Conclusions. Modal-harmonic principles are a central element of the system of jazz theory. It develops harmonic imagination, auditory sensitivity, and analytical flexibility in the performer. Work on modal-harmonic models forms the basis for conscious and free improvisation. Thus, the performer’s creative freedom in jazz is the result of an organic combination of auditory experience and a theoretical understanding of harmony. The development of modal-harmonic thinking enables the musician to avoid stereotyped patterns in improvisation.
