Abstract

The purpose of this article is to study the educational activities of library centers established by representatives of the Ukrainian intelligentsia in Prague between 1921 and 1938. Research methodology. In the process of analyzing and interpreting the educational activities of library centers organized by representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora in 1921–1938, various methodological approaches were applied, which allowed us to solve the outlined problem and reveal important issues of the history of the Ukrainian diaspora, in particular its activities in the interwar period of 1921–1937. The research was based on general scientific methods, in particular: analytical-logical; general historical methods: historical-problematic, analytical and critical analysis; and a number of specialized source research methods: source research and typology. Specific historical sources were also used: documents and materials created during the period under study, reflecting specific events and revealing important aspects of the cultural and educational activities of representatives of the Ukrainian emigrant intelligentsia. The culturological approach contributed to a deeper understanding of cultural and educational activities of libraries as centers for the promotion of Ukrainian history and culture. Thus, it was determined that the majority of library centers created within the structure of higher education institutions, foundations and public organizations consider cultural and educational activities to be one of the key areas of their work. It was found that the vast majority of educational events were devoted to the popularization of Ukrainian history, Ukrainian culture and the Ukrainian language. It was shown that libraries collected materials on the scientific, educational and political activities of representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora in Czechoslovakia while in emigration. Educational activities were aimed at educating Ukrainian youth, on whom great hopes were placed for the future development of the Ukrainian state. Libraries operating at higher educational institutions organized exhibitions that helped students and teachers expand their academic knowledge and conduct research. These exhibitions were also often visited by residents of Prague and other cities of Czechoslovakia, which contributed to the popularization of Ukrainian culture and the dissemination of knowledge about Ukraine and Ukrainians. It is shown that financial support for the activities of libraries, museums and archives was provided by Ukrainian emigrants and state institutions of Czechoslovakia, which was of great importance for the development of the Ukrainian community in Czechoslovakia and for Ukrainians who were forced to emigrate to European countries. It was found that scientific research conducted by scientists, university teachers and students played a key role in the cultural and educational activities of libraries
