Abstract

The article explores the specifics of performing cantilena on the classical guitar, using Leo Brouwer’s Un día de Noviembre as a case study. The relevance of the topic lies in the necessity for guitarists to master the ability to convey a singing melodic character, which is one of the essential components of the instrument’s artistic expressiveness. The aim of the research is to identify performance means and techniques that ensure the achievement of a cantilena-like sound on the guitar. The methodology includes musicological analysis, comparative examination of editions and recordings, as well as a performance-pedagogical approach. The materials of the study encompass the composer’s original editions and the interpretations of prominent guitarists, which made it possible to compare different approaches to performing cantilena. The findings demonstrate that the cantilena character in guitar performance is achieved through a combination of factors: the use of various playing techniques (apoyando — rest stroke, tirando — free stroke, arpeggiato — arpeggiated chord technique), variability of dynamic development, rational fingering, and the timbral possibilities of the instrument. An important aspect is the consideration of different editions and interpretative approaches, which enable the performer to select the most effective means for revealing the musical content. The practical significance of the article lies in its applicability within the educational process of art institutions, particularly in guitar classes. The conclusions emphasize that cantilena is a universal category of musical thinking, which ensures artistic integrity in performance and requires systematic reflection in guitar practice. Future research may focus on studying cantilena in other genres of guitar music and comparing it with similar principles in the performance of bowed string instruments.
