Abstract

Mythology (from the Ancient Greek μυθολογία, where μῦθος means “myth” and λόγος means “word” or “teaching”) 1) a coherent body of myths belonging to a particular ethnic group, culture, or religious tradition; a form of social consciousness, a way of understanding natural and social reality characteristic of the early stages of societal development; 2) the theory of myth, a scientific discipline that studies the origin, content, structure, and functioning of myths in culture, as well as their relationship to other narrative forms. As a branch of the humanities, it encompasses, in particular, comparative mythology, which aims to study the connections between the myths of different cultures and to identify common motifs, archetypal images, and structures in the myths of various peoples, thereby enabling the identification of universal patterns in myth-making.
