Abstract
Myth (from the Ancient Greek μῦθος — word, legend, tale) is a term with multiple meanings. Meaning of the term 1) An archaic sacred tradition that conveys the ancient beliefs of a particular ethnic group (community, culture, religion) regarding the genesis of the universe, humanity, the gods, etc., and describes the origin, essence, and order of natural and social phenomena. It is associated with the personification of the supernatural world. The truth of a myth is affirmed through the authority of tradition, ritual practice, and the emotional persuasiveness of symbolic images. The collection of myths of a particular ethnic group, culture, or religion constitutes mythology. 2) In a literary and artistic sense — a) a narrative form originating from oral tradition and characterized by the stability of plots, motifs, and images associated with religious and cosmogonic concepts; b) a specific mode of artistic thinking based on the symbolization, generalization, and modeling of reality through universal prototypes (archetypes). It undergoes numerous interpretations and transformations in the course of historical development. 3) In a social sense—a stable, emotionally charged system of ideological beliefs that confers a special symbolic status on certain ideas, events, or figures, transforming them into objects of faith or worship. 4) In semiotics—a secondary sign system, a specific mode of interpreting language and a form of signification, as well as a special mechanism of communication. 5) In mass consciousness—a widespread, simplified, often erroneous conception of reality, disseminated spontaneously or deliberately, which is accepted at face value without critical reflection, as a given.
