Abstract

The presented publication examines a long period in the development of Ukrainian musical art from the Middle Ages to the early 19th century, which was under the influence of European culture. The main stylistic features of different eras are analyzed, as well as the distinctive artistic characteristics shaped by the interaction of Greco-Byzantine and Western European influences, which encompassing church, secular, and folk traditions. Liturgical singing was exclusively vocal, while instrumental music was actively performed in rituals and celebrations, using string, wind, and percussion instruments. The study considers the evolution of musical instruments as the foundation for the further development of Ukrainian musical tradition within the European context. It also explores the impact of the new humanistic ideology on the reformation of Ukrainian art, in particular the introduction of linear notation, the inclusion of polyphonic singing in liturgical practice, and – in secular music – the development of instrumental genres and dances. Attention is drawn to the significance of educational institutions for the advancement of professional musicianship, especially in vocal and instrumental arts. An unknown page of the creative work of the 18th-century Ukrainian opera singer and harpsichordist Yelyzaveta Bilohradska is highlighted, whose art testified to a high level of professionalism. The involvement of Hetman Kyrylo Rozumovsky in the development of Ukrainian artistic education is considered, which significantly influenced the formation of the Ukrainian vocal school. The creative legacy of Dmytro Bortniansky and his influence on the composer Mykhailo Verbytski and other representatives of the so-called “Peremyshl School” are also noted. Thus, a comprehensive study of Ukrainian musical art makes it possible to emphasize its continuous evolutionary progress, which in various ways contributed to the growth of professional musicians, as well as the assimilation of different styles and genres within the framework of European culture.
