Abstract
The article is devoted to the analysis of the interaction between the tendencies of centralization and polarization in the musical thinking of Borys Liatoshynskyi, based on the piano cycle “Reflections” (1925). The purpose of the research is to identify the role of centralization and polarization as fundamental principles of organizing the composer’s musical language, as well as to clarify the mechanisms of their interaction in the process of shaping an individual style within the context of Ukrainian musical modernism. An additional objective is to specify the functioning of these tendencies at different levels of musical structure – from pitch organization to the compositional integrity of the work. The relevance of the study is due to the need to rethink the stylistic processes of Ukrainian musical modernism in the context of modern musicology, as well as the need to clarify analytical approaches to the study of individual composer systems of the first half of the twentieth century. The research methodology is based on the application of a structural-functional method of analysis, combined with elements of intonational, modal-harmonic, and compositional approaches. This made it possible to comprehensively examine the pitch organization, principles of form-building, and sonic characteristics of the work, as well as to reveal interconnections between different levels of the musical language. The application of a systemic approach allowed centralization and polarization to be interpreted as dynamic categories functioning within a unified artistic model. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the interpretation of centralization and polarization as interrelated and complementary principles of organizing musical language, which makes it possible to clarify the mechanisms of the formation of the composer’s individual style within the context of Ukrainian modernism. Conclusions. Centralization is realized through tonal, modal, and compositional factors, whereas polarization manifests itself in the interaction of multi-level elements of musical language – modal, harmonic, textural, and sonic. In the works of B. Liatoshynskyi, these tendencies do not oppose each other but form an integral dynamic system in which contrast performs an integrative function and serves as a means of achieving a new quality of artistic unity.
