Abstract
In the overall process of the development of the Lviv professional violin school, the article presents the life and creative path of Ivan Omelianovych Levytskyi–one of the first Ukrainian professional violinist-pedagogues. In his time, he was known as a choirmaster, a violin instructor at the Mykola Lysenko Music Institute in Lviv, the author of numerous choral, vocal, and violin works, textbooks on the history of music and harmony, and the organizer of many Shevchenko concerts, who, due to various circumstances, was later undeservedly forgotten. The main focus is placed on I. Levytskyi’s performance and teaching activities, as well as on the musical-methodological analysis of his violin works as relevant educational material for use in the training of students at art institutions of various levels. The genre and stylistic features of his compositions are highlighted, and their technical and interpretative potential is determined. The expediency of including the artist’s violin compositions in students’ educational and concert repertoire is substantiated as a means of developing professional mastery, artistic thinking, and stylistic competence. A separate part of the article is devoted to the significant contribution of the well-known violinist Petro Tsehelskyi, who devoted a large part of his professional activity to promoting Ivan Levytskyi’s violin works and made studio recordings of them. To mark the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth, he also typeset and published these works at his own expense, including the suite “Mazepa”. While individual pieces by I. Levytskyi had been published in different years, the suite “Mazepa” existed only in manuscript form. Petro Tsehelskyi’s merit also lay in reconstructing and editing the musical material found in the archives. The article also analyzes this suite as a programmatic work that combines a national idea with the European Romantic tradition.
