Abstract

It has been established that libraries consistently remained the central element of cultural and educational work in the camps, performing an important educational function for those internees who tried to make productive use of their time in Czechoslovakia. Notably, the expansion of library holdings was ensured both by various camp organizations and through charitable donations. To facilitate access to books for particular groups of internees, some circles established and maintained their own small libraries intended exclusively for their members. It is demonstrated that the Ukrainian book in the camps of interned UGA soldiers was one of the most important tools for fostering their national and patriotic feelings. A notable phenomenon was the establishment and maintenance of independent book collections by various camp circles, as well as the circulation of “traveling” libraries to UGA labor groups outside the camps. Thanks to the camp libraries, the interned Ukrainian soldiers had every opportunity to organize their self-education, and the intensity of the book movement testified to their high interest in acquiring additional knowledge.
