Abstract

The article deals with different exercises for teaching extensive reading. Pre-reading tasks: exercises on comprehension and checking of the main gist of a text, prediction of a text, comprehension of the structural-sensible components. While reading tasks: exercises on comprehension of a text as a whole, dividing a text into parts, putting a cut-up text in order, determination the main points of a text, guessing meaning of unknown words from context. Post-reading tasks: exercises on checking the main gist of a text, developing reading and speaking skills, determination of the educational value of a text. The lengthy experience of using these exercises in the process of teaching extensive reading confirmed their effectiveness.
