Abstract
The article addresses storylines and interpretations of the historic past in the number of Serbian heroic folk songs published by the famous Serbian philologist, folklorist, and historian Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic. The historic background of storylines reflects events of the Serbian history related to the process of medieval state-building, feudal wars of Serbian nobility, defence against the Turkish invasion and struggle for liberation from Turkish conquerors. We attempt a comparison of interpretations of the folk songs characters’ life trajectories and deeds with the life trajectories and achievements of the famous and only passingly touched historic figures. Life descriptions and activity assessments of famous historic figures in the Serbian folk songs can be used for correcting, completing, and making new interpretations of well-known as well as lesser-known historic facts. Serbian heroic songs glorifying Serbs’ historic past and their struggle with the Ottoman Empire were translated into a number of European languages encouraging national liberation movements of Slavic peoples in the XIXth – beginning of the XXth centuries including Ukrainians.
