Abstract

The article deals with the role of background knowledge as a mean of advanced learning of a literary work at the World Literature lessons at school, which help to develop moral values, cultural and cognitive interests, reader’s appreciation of art. The article proves the necessity for background knowledge use in the implementation of local lore and ethnic culture approaches in World Literature learning, which involve fact-finding of everyday life, traditions, history and artistic culture of people whose literature is being studied. The article distinguishes between the notions of background knowledge and commentary from the philological and methodological points of view. The article defines the place of background knowledge among the building blocks of the World Literature course and gives the examples of using various background knowledge types at the lessons.
